Well-designed retail lighting can increase sales by up to 264%

We’re counting down to the Retail Design Expo on 8-9 May, where our in-house expert the Lighting Doctor will be offering advice on how to get the best results from store lighting design.

So what better time to share some compelling figures with you? Research carried out by our team here at Greenlite Group has found that well designed retail lighting can increase sales by up to 264%.

If it sounds too good to be true, it’s worth noting that the research is based on our own case studies, on sites where we’ve undertaken a complete lighting re-design. The reasons are clear: Most retailers will agree that the right atmosphere can be more important than the product itself. Carefully designed store lighting can enhance moods, direct customers to displays and show product colours at their best.

We understand that high quality environmental and dramatic lighting provides a retailer with a distinct advantage over their competitors from the offset. Potential customers are attracted to stores that are well lit and look inviting – this also makes people stay in stores longer, which increases the chances of them spending money. The knock on effect of this is increased revenue and greater profits.

The customer experience

Retail psychology highlights that shopping is all about the experience for a lot of customers, and this is particularly the case for ‘brick-and-mortar’ retail. People with disposable incomes want to be seen shopping at stores that supply the latest ranges. Illuminating these displays in an attractive and even dramatic way can enhance the buying process.

At Greenlite, we think differently from other lighting companies. Here’s a final word from our colleague the Lighting Doctor:

“The lighting industry has focused too much on selling physical “lights” and fixtures when in fact it’s the outcome of these products that is what retailers are really interested in. Whilst the light fittings may be attractive, may be revolutionary and may save energy and money, it’s the light that they produce that can have such a significant effect on store sales figures. The work we have completed over the last few years proves this is the case and lighting is more than just reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs.”
